Degree Overview

WGU Washington’s online ELL endorsement preparation program is a great investment. This program is designed for currently licensed elementary and secondary school teachers who desire to be licensed to teach in ELL or ESL settings. With this endorsement, you will becoming highly qualified in ELL or ESL, increase your career opportunities, earn re-licensure points, and possibly become eligible for lane changes leading to increased salary.

Who the program is for:

  • Licensed teachers with bachelor’s degrees who are interested in ELL or ESL instruction.
  • Community college teachers who work in ELL or ESL settings.
  • District instructional personnel and curricula leaders.
  • "Emergency credentialed" ELL or ESL teachers who need the endorsements to be considered highly qualified.

IMPORTANT: This program is not for those who want to learn to speak and write the English language. This program is also not for those interested in becoming English teachers or teaching English in a foreign country. This program leads to endorsement in ELL or ESL in the state of Washington. If you wish to pursue that endorsement, you will need to complete your practicum at the K-12 level that aligns with your state endorsement requirements and the WGU ELL PreK-12 program. Students who complete their practicum in any other setting other than a K-12 setting should be prepared NOT to be recommended for licensure. Each student should be aware of the requirements of their particular state for K-12 educators.

Note: As part of Western Governors University, the online teaching degree programs at WGU Washington are NCATE accredited.

Your tuition covers the minimum "full-time load" of competency units (the equivalent to credit hours)—8 CUs is the minimum for graduate students—as well as all coursework attempted in that time. For the most part, there is no limit on the number of competency units you can attempt in a 6-month term. Whether you complete more or fewer units, you are charged the same flat rate.

Tuition compares favorably to the rates of Washington state universities. Our tuition is also typically half what other reputable online universities charge. At WGU Washington, you enjoy the cost savings of a nonprofit university.
