WGU Washington Launches Computer Science Degree Program to Help Meet High Demand for Qualified Talent

Program includes key IT certifications

KENT — Today, WGU Washington announces the launch of its Bachelor’s of Science in Computer Science (BSCS) degree program. Online and competency-based, the program is excellent for working professionals and includes valuable certifications from CIW, CompTIA, Axelos, and Oracle, at no additional cost. WGU Washington recently added this new degree program to meet the growing demand for software developers, systems analysts and other computing professionals. Powered by Washington’s innovation-driven economy, computing professionals are among the most sought-after workers in the state.

“Statewide, there’s a great deal of opportunity for Washingtonians to work and succeed in technology-focused fields,” said Steve Mullin, President of the Washington Roundtable. “WGU Washington’s computer science degree program was developed with the help of the business community to ensure graduates are well-trained to meet current and future industry needs.”

Nationally, in 2015, there were nearly 10 times more computing jobs open than qualified computer science graduates. In addition, the demand for computer scientists is projected to grow 19 percent from 2016 to 2026, significantly faster than the average for all occupations.

WGU Washington’s BSCS will teach graduates to design, develop and optimize systems, preparing them for opportunities in careers such as computer systems analyst, programmer, AI specialist, software engineer, UX designer and network architect. The university’s competency-based approach allows students to draw on the knowledge and skills they have gained from previous experience and education. They may move quickly through material they already know and take the time they need to learn new material. Students have 24/7 access to their course materials and faculty members provide one-on-one support. Terms are six months long, and students in the BSCS are charged a flat-rate tuition of $3,190 per term, regardless of the number of courses completed. Many students will be able to accelerate their studies, finishing their degrees sooner, saving both time and money.

Students who apply now can begin their program as early as June 1, 2018.
